Comparative and superlative forms

Adjectives: tall, taller, tallest

1. Một vài thí dụ về câu có tính từ so sánh hơn (comparative adjectives) và tính từ so sánh nhất (superlative adjectives):

The queue was longer than I expected.

This is the saddest story I’ve ever heard.

2. Tính từ ngắn (short adjectives)

Ta hình thành so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất với tính từ có một âm tiết bằng cách thêm –er và –est:

tall           à          taller à           tallest

cheap       à          cheaper à           cheapest

3. Nếu tính từ có tận cùng bằng –e, ta thêm –r và –est:

nice à          nicer à          nicest

4. Nếu tính từ có tận cùng bằng một nguyên âm và một phụ âm, ta gấp đôi phụ âm rồi thêm –er và –est:

big à          bigger à          biggest

hot à          hotter à          hottest

5. Tính từ dài (long adjectives)

Nếu tính từ có tận cùng bằng –y, ta biến đổi y thành i và thêm –er và –est:

pretty à          prettier à          prettiest

happy à          happier à         happiest

6. Một số hình thức bất quy tắc:

good          à         better à         best

bad          à          worse à          worst

far          à          further à          furthest

Cũng cần ghi nhớ hình thức so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất của số lượng từ (quantifiers) little, much và many:

little          à          less à          least

much          à          more à          most

many          à           more à          most

7. Ta hình thành so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất với more và most cho các tính từ khác:

Tính từ tận cùng bằng –ing, thí dụ: boring, interesting

Tính từ tận cùng bằng –ed, thí dụ: tired, settled, annoyed

Tính từ tận cùng bằng –ful, thí dụ: careful, helpful

Tính từ tận cùng bằng –less, thí dụ: useless, hopeless

Tính từ dài, thí dụ: practical, expensive

That was the most boring book I’ve ever read!

This book is more expensive than that one.

8. Ta sử dụng tính từ với danh từ và đại từ. Chúng mô tả người hoặc vật ta đang nói đến.

Thực hành văn phạm

1. Ta sử dụng tính từ so sánh hơn + than để so sánh người này với người khác, vật này với vật khác. Tình huống ta nói về ngoại hình hoặc tính cách của những người ta biết:

Tim is taller than the other boys.

Our new neighbours are more pleasant than the old ones.

2. Ta có thể sử dụng tính từ so sánh hơn với than all the other / any / anything / ever để so sánh một người hoặc một vật với những thứ khác trong cùng một nhóm:

This TV is more expensive than all the others.

This is a better price than any of the others.

3. Ta sử dụng the + tính từ so sánh nhất khi ta so sánh một người hoặc một vật với tất cả nhóm chúng thuộc về. Ta muốn nói đến một trong số nhiều người hoặc nhiều vật thì ‘. . . hơn những cái khác’ (more . . . than the others).

This TV is the most expensive.

This is the best price.

4. Ta có thể thêm nhiều chi tiết hơn vào hình thức so sánh bằng cách sử dụng much, far, a lot, a bit/little. Đó là trường hợp ta muốn làm rõ ta đang nói đến người nào trong một nhóm:

Tom is a bit taller than the other boys.

Sally is much taller than the other girls.

5. Ta không cần chú ý đến phần thứ hai trong hình thức so sánh khi ta có thể hiểu được từ phần còn lại trong câu:

The other boys are tall but Tim is a bit taller.
