Story

The year is 1998, the place is the Arklay Mountains outside the midwestern town of Raccoon City. A series of bizarre murders have been occuring in the rural area, with sightings of "monsters" roaming the land. The Raccoon City Police Department has dispatched its Special Tactics And Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) Bravo team to investigate the area. Contact was lost, Alpha team has been sent in to find them. The search mission turns into a nightmare as Alpha team becomes stranded in a mysterious mansion and must fight for their lives, solve puzzles, and find keys (while juggling their inventory) to survive their terrifying ordeal.

While the concept of being stranded in a "haunted mansion" seems simple enough, there's quite a bit of story underlining the whole game that players can stumble across via texts in letters/diaries/faxes/etc. What starts out as a seemingly normal "Night of the Living Dead" zombie experience, turns into a fascinating conspiracy story of a pharmaceutical company secretly producing biological weapons, with a nice twist at the end involving your teammates. The story established here has exploded into an entire franchise with a rich history dedicated to its fiction. It's an awesome start and a great experience to witness where the series began. Expect to spend 4-6 hours your first time through either game if you know what you're doing, but it is possible to beat under 3 hours for those special rewards.
Gameplay

Resident Evil is a third person action/adventure game that is heavy on exploration and light puzzle solving, with a fair amount of gunplay mixed in. Gameplay is set up via fixed camera angles on prerendered backgrounds. Characters are controlled "tank-like" in that they can move only forward and back, having to stop to rotate left or right. This control scheme is rather frustrating when navigating environments filled with enemies, or especially during boss encounters. It can however be remedied somewhat by changing the controls. For the Gamecube REmake Control Option C moves forward movement to the right trigger, clicking in to run. Played on the PSP, the Director's Cut controls can be completely customized to your liking. I went with a similar layout to the REmake by placing forward movement to the left bumper, the sprint button being moved from the square button to the more comfortable spot of the circle button. These adjustments allow you to move and turn at the same time, greatly improving navigation, especially during enemy encounters.

Combat works with the player pressing a shoulder button to ready their weapon and pressing the attack button. Characters cannot move once they've readied their weapon, so tactical positions must be made to avoid taking any damage. Differing enemies demand their own tactics, so combat constantly stays enjoyable. Zombies can easily be taken on from a distance with the pistol, however zombie dogs are very fast and can leap at you, usually a shotgun being the better weapon to use. Aiming can be done manual or auto, however I cannot advise the use of manual as the player must rotate their character just right to hit an enemy, otherwise you'll end up wasting ammo. By using auto the character automatically points themselves at the nearest enemy, an absolute godsend as the fixed camera angles can you leave guessing as to where you should shoot. Weapons can also be upward or downward, useful in key situations in which a headshot with a shotgun can save ammo, or a downed zombie can be finished for good.

REmake Difference

Aside from the obvious graphical upgrade (with some amazing effects added), REmake actually boasts changes to the majority of the game layout, specifically new locations and puzzles. Series creator Shinji Mikami stated that the remake is 70% different from the original. The mansion itself has had some of its layout even changed as well, now everything has some purpose and is quite eye catching. As awesomely cheesy as the opening and ending live action sequences from the original RE were, they've been completely redone in CG this time around and new (and better) voice actors have fleshed out the characters.

Enemy and item locations have been mixed around, even some entirely new enemies and bosses have been added, one of which seems inspired by the undying Nemesis from RE3. The scariest enemy comes in the form of Crimson Heads, killed zombies that weren't beheaded or burned that come back faster and more vicious than ever. Best of all new story additions have been added that links many of the games, these are cleverly included through many texts you can find. Some of the more major gameplay changes include Chris and Jill having their own unique items, a lighter for Chris and a lockpick for Jill, seemingly influenced by RE2.
