Mục đích của bài luyện tập này là giúp bạn phát triển các chiến thuật cho bài IELTS Reading nhằm tìm câu trả lời chính xác nhất cho những câu hỏi ngắn một cách nhanh nhất có thể.
Để làm được bài học này nhanh chóng bạn cần phải xác định phần nội dung câu hỏi liên quan trong bài. Tuy nhiên, thông thường những phần nội dung chứa câu trả lời có các từ đồng nghĩa hơn là các từ trích dẫn nguyên bản từ trong đoạn văn, hoặc nếu không phải là từ đồng nghĩa thì sẽ có các cụm từ có cùng nghĩa với cụm từ trong đoạn văn.
Nếu đề thi không ra như vậy thì việc tìm ra câu trả lời có vẻ quá dễ dàng.
Có thể bài tập dưới đây ngắn hơn bài tập trong các tài liệu luyện thi IELTS thật sự, nhưng đây là một bài luyện mà bạn có thể áp dụng phương pháp sử dụng các câu hỏi đẻ tìm ra câu trả lời với một bài thủ thuật IELTS Reading mà bạn sử dụng trong bài thi thật.
Hong Kong takes steps to improve English
a) The Hong Kong government today published proposals to introduce basic English language competency assessments for primary, secondary and university students as well as some professionals. The goal is to bolster written English and Chinese as well as spoken English and Mandarin in the former British colony.
b) The government said it wanted to push students to improve their English, but officials acknowledged Hong Kong had little chance of competing with rival trading centre Singapore.
c) English is an official language in both Hong Kong and Singapore, but many more Singaporeans are fluent in it because it is taught as a first language in schools.
d) "People always compare Singapore's English with our English," said Michael Tien, a businessman who also serves as chairman of Hong Kong's standing committee on language education and research.
e) "Don't forget English in Singapore is their first language," he told reporters. "I don't think it's a fair comparison. With reading and writing Chinese, they are way behind us."
f) Hong Kong's dominant language is the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. Mr Tien said the territory is also pushing ahead to lift standards of Mandarin, the main dialect in mainland China. Although Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997 and many residents speak impeccable English, many more do not. Some critics believe this to be an economic hindrance because English is the international language of business.
g) Many students in Hong Kong are taught in Cantonese because few teachers are proficient enough in English. Mr Tien said raising the standard would be a "tall order."
h) "English is challenging," he said. "I don't think we can expect 100% of our people to be fluent in English, so I'm shooting for university graduates to start with."

Nhìn vào câu hỏi thứ nhất (1) và so sánh với đoạn văn (a). Từ nào giúp bạn tìm ra câu trả lời?
Ví dụ:
(1) How does the Hong Kong government intend to measure the level of spoken English?
Cụm từ ‘Hong Kong government’ chỉ ra rằng chúng ta đã tìm đúng đoạn văn nhưng cần phải nhìn vào chi tiết quan trọng là tìm ra cách họ “intend to measure".
Từ “proposals" được sử dụng như là một danh từ trong đoạn văn, nhưng cụm từ “to propose" là một động từ đồng nghĩa với “intent". Vì vậy chúng ta có thể nói “the Hong Kong government intends to introduce basic English Language competency assessments.”
Từ ‘assess’ đồng nghĩa với ‘measure the level’ nghĩa là đong đếm thứ gì đó, trong trường hợp này chúng ta cần phải xác định rằng chính quyền Hồng Kong muốn đánh giá con người ở “Basic English Language”, vì vậy mà câu trả lời là:
Answer To introduce competency assessments.
Đoạn văn tương ứng: “The Hong Kong Government.”
Từ mà giúp tìm ra câu trả lời “proposals” và “assessments.”
Vì vậy mà bạn có thể sử dụng những chiến thuật để tìm ra câu trả lời một cách nhanh chóng!
